Hermeneutics history can be said as the history of interpretation conflict. One
of the conflict was between Romantic hermeneutics with its subjectivism
tendency and structuralism with its objectivism tendency. This research wanted to
showed the basic and epistemology structure of Paul Ricoeur’s interpretation
theory and to showed his critics on Romantic hermeneutics and structuralism.
The research was a library research that made Paul Ricoeur’s interpretation
theory in the middle of conflict of Romantic hermeneutics and structuralism as
material object and epistemology as formal object. The theme of study would be
analyzed in the four of epistemology-hermeneutical sketch based on the textuality
characters, the interpretation method, the position of interpretation subject, and the
truth of interpretation. The research used the method model of factual-historical of
figure that consist of interpretation, internal coherency, historical continuity,
description, and comparison as the methodical element.
The research showed that Paul Ricoeur built his theory basic on discourse,
text, and metaphor. His epistemological structure could be seen in the sketch of
the text character with its structure and world, the dialectics of understanding and
explanation method, the reader contextuality, and the plurality of truth. His critics
oriented to Romantic hermeneutic and structuralism attitudes that reduced the text
status, simplified the interpretation method, placed the reader on netrality position,
and held the singularity of truth

Sejarah hermeneutika bisa dikatakan sebagai sejarah konflik interpretasi. Salah
satu konflik interpretasi tersebut adalah antara hermeneutika Romantis, dengan
kecenderungan subyektivismenya, dan strukturalisme, dengan kecenderungan
obyektivismenya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan basis dan struktur
epistemologis teori interpretasi Paul Ricoeur dan menunjukkan kritiknya atas
hermeneutika Romantis dan strukturalisme.
Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian pustaka, dengan menjadikan konsep teori
interpretasi Paul Ricoeur di tengah konflik antara hermeneutika Romantis dan
strukturalisme sebagai obyek materialnya, dan epistemologi sebagai obyek
formalnya. Obyek pembahasan akan dianalisis dalam empat kerangka
epistemologis-hermeneutis berdasarkan karakter tekstualitas, metode interpretasi,
posisi subyek interpretasi, dan kebenaran interpretasi. Metode yang digunakan
dalam penelitian ini adalah model penelitian historis-faktual mengenai tokoh,
dengan interpretasi, koherensi intern, kesinambungan historis, deskripsi, dan
komparasi sebagai unsur-unsur metodisnya.
Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Paul Ricoeur membangun basis teori
interpretasinya berdasarkan wacana, teks, dan metafor. Struktur epistemologisnya
yang bisa dilihat dalam kerangka karakter teks yang memiliki struktur dan dunia,
dialektika metode pemahaman dan penjelasan, kontekstualitas pembaca, dan
pluralitas kebenaran. Kritiknya mengarah pada posisi hermeneutika Romantis dan
strukturalisme yang mereduksi status teks, menyempitkan metode interpretasi,
menempatkan netralitas pembaca, dan memegangi ketunggalan kebenaran.
